In her description, the reader is able to better understand the sacrifices and added responsibility that his affliction demanded. Gifty describes Nana’s detox experience, rehab, and relapse to the reader. Nana’s battle with addiction was a battle for the entire family.

Nana focuses on learning the sport of basketball as he attempts to distance himself further from The Chin Chin Man. Gifty’s road to get closer with her mother was through religion her road to get close to Han was through science. Their relationship progresses and she shares Nana’s battle with addiction with Han, something that she’d struggled to share with two prior romantic partners. Their relationship grows through both of their commitments to their work – science. A moment of skepticism could have been a moment of understanding.Īs she spends more time in the lab with her mice, she also spends more time with Han, her lab mate. Which, if he’d known about Nana’s addiction and her mother’s abuse of Ambien, would have been an awkward moment avoided. Raymond mentions her being prescribed “the good stuff” and questions her skepticism with doctors and medicine.
